GLOSSARY

What is a sandbox?

DEFINITION

A sandbox is an isolated test environment with sample data, where you can build and test an integration without touching real customer accounts.

Also called: Sandbox environment, Test environment, Demo company

How it works

Platforms offer sandboxes in different forms: demo companies in QuickBooks Online and Xero, developer stores in Shopify, test accounts in Stripe, or paid sandbox instances for ERPs. Sandboxes let you test auth, reads and especially writes safely. They rarely match production exactly, so edge cases still appear when real customers connect.

Example

A team builds its invoice write-back against a QuickBooks Online sandbox company, tests failure cases such as a closed period, then switches the same code to a live connection.

In integrations

Unify Int offers sandbox access free to early-access teams and design partners during the developer preview, with demo companies on QuickBooks Online, Xero and Shopify and test credentials for other platforms where vendors offer them. Request it on the Get started page. Test failure paths in the sandbox, not just the happy path: expired tokens, closed periods, missing accounts and rate limit errors. Those are the cases that reach your support team after launch.
